In this opening match of their league campaign the fresher B team accounted for near neighbours and arch rivals LIT in a very one sided affair. Having witnessed the fresher A team’s humiliating defeat at the hands of the same opposition earlier, the lads were anxious to restore pride for the college. They had a great start with an early Ger Bond goal and he followed this up with two frees to give UL a five point lead however this was quickly cut to one as LIT replied with a free and then a well taken goal. UL were well on top throughout the field and this began to show on the scoreboard as Ger Bond added another goal from a twenty yard free and the hard working Declan Teefy put his name on the score sheet with a gaol and a point. UL finished the half well and had further points from Enda Walsh, Ger Bond (free), and Colm Mackey. This left the half time at 3-06 to 1-2.
The foundations for this impressive victory were well and truly laid in the first half and UL closed out the match with another Ger Bond goal early in the second half. The impressive Colm Mackey at midfield added three long range frees and it was left to top scorer Ger Bond to conclude the scoring with a pointed free giving him a personal tally of 3-05. Great credit is due to the defence as they managed to keep LIT scoreless for the entire second half.
As mentioned earlier Ger Bond and Colm Mackey were both impressive for the winners. Others to impress were Pat O Neill, John Rodgers, Declan Teefy and Enda Walsh.
