Description of core competencies and research interests

Prof. Cunnane is leader of the research group on fundamental and applied aspects of electrochemistry. He started his career in electrochemistry as Works Chemist for a company engaged in the manufacture of printed circuit boards. As such he has some 16 years experience in the field. Presently there are 4 postgraduate students and 3 post-doctoral fellows in his group covering a wide range of areas.  Dr. Cunnane has published over 30 research papers and has supervised/supervises the work of 15 research students. Accumulated funding stands at over €1,700,000 from national, European and industrial sources including current project.

Research activities include:

Fundamental and applied studies of electrochemical reactions, including, ion and electron transfer reactions at electrified liquid-liquid interfaces; electroactive polymers, thin films, electroplating, electrodeposition of composite coatings, aqueous corrosion and the anisotropic etching of silicon.

Membership of Research Evaluation Committees and Panels

In April of 1998 I was invited to adjudicate as an expert evaluator on the EU- International Collaboration Programme for EU/Japan/Korea exchanges.

I have acted as peer reviewer for Forbairt-NRSFB programmes and latterly for Enterprise Ireland NRSFB programmes:

Post-doctoral Fellowships-1996, International Collaboration-1997, and Basic Research Programme-Chemistry 1999.

Membership of Professional &External Bodies

In May of 1995 I was invited by the Minister of Commerce, Science and Technology to join the board of the newly formed National Research Support Fund Board (Measure 4). The board oversees the allocation of funding to the Third Level Colleges and advises and formulates policy on S&T matters which affect this sector. The appointment ended in December 1998.

Member of the International Society of Electrochemists

Membership of Journal Editorial/Advisory Boards or Referee Panels

A special issue of the Royal society of Chemistry journal 'The Analyst' was devoted to the proceedings of EIRELEC '93. I along with my co-organisers were the guest editors for the issue which appeared as volume 119, No. 5, May 1994. I was again invited as co-guest editor of a special edition of 'The Analyst' in relation to EIRELEC '98 which appeared as vol.123, no. 10 in November 1998.

I have acted as peer reviewer for the Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry, Electrochim. Acta, The Analyst, and the Journal of Applied Electrochemistry.

Organisation of Conferences

In September 1993 I was one of the organisers, with MEG Lyons and M Smyth, of the international conference: EIRELEC '93 - Electrochemistry to the Year 2000. This was held in Adare, Co. Limerick, Ireland. Over 60 people from 12 countries attended, the Plenary lecturers Prof. AJ Bard, Prof. JO'M Bockris and Prof. J Wang were from the USA, the Invited lecturers Prof P. Bartlett, Prof. A Hamnett and Prof. D J Schiffrin were from the UK. The meeting was sponsored by the Electrochemical and Electroanalytical divisions of the Royal Society of Chemistry

In March of 1998 I was a co-organiser with M Smyth and R Forster of the international conference EIRELEC 98 held in Howth, Co. Dublin. In this case over 90 people attended from 12 different countries attended. The plenary lecturers were Prof. A Bond, Australia, Prof. Craig Lunte, USA, and Prof. M Thompson, Canada. The meeting was sponsored by the Electrochemical and Electroanalytical divisions of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

I am a member of the organising committee of a Euroconference, "Modern trends in Electrochemistry of Molecular Interfaces"to be held in Majvik, Finland between August 28-September 1999. The other members of the organising committee are: Dr. K Kontturi, Finland, Prof. F Silva, Portugal and Prof. D Schiffrin, UK.

I am a member of the organising committee for Electrochem 2000, an international conference normally held in the UK, to be held in Dublin in September of 2000.
