The Summer School draws participants from North
America, all parts of Europe, and the Middle East. We strive
consciously to preserve this multinational milieu as the best
guarantee of lively and informed debate. The 'European' focus
of the programme is linked directly to 'local' exploration
of the historical, cultural, economic and social characteristics
of Ireland's Midwest region. The Summer School makes an ideal
component of a longer stay in Ireland, or other parts of Europe,
during the month of July.
The University of Limerick has a well established
reputation in the field of European Studies, being one of
the first Universities in Europe to recognise it as a distinct
discipline in the early 1970's. The Centre for European Studies
was itself recognised as a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence,
in July 1999.

The Shannon River flows past the university campus

The University
Campus, in a parkland setting on the banks of the River
Shannon is acknowledged to be Ireland's most beautiful.
The historic city of Limerick is only 3 kilometres away
and Shannon Airport 35 minutes by car. There are many
historical, cultural and sporting attractions in the region
including the Cliffs of Moher, The Ring of Kerry, the
home of W.B. Yeats at Thoor Ballylee, and the streets
of Limerick made famous by Angela's Ashes. Fishing golf,
riding, water sports and hill-walking are all well catered
for. |

Kilmurry Village

Summer School students are
lodged in the Student Village complex near the campus
where the single study-bedrooms grouped around shared
kitchen and dining areas provide the ideal environment
for study, reflection and relaxation. A well established
Summer School tradition is the informal (and economic)
do-it-yourself cook-in at the end of a busy day! Nearby
facilities include a hairdresser, bank, laundry, food
shop, travel agent, bar and restaurants. |
