The Centre provides an identity and support for faculty undertaking research in the area of European Studies. In conjunction with the Assistant Dean for Research the Centre seeks to identify funding opportunities and promote applications for research on the European Union and more broadly Europe. In particular, the objective is to link the research activities of the Centre with other European centres and University partners who share and have similar interests to those of faculty in Limerick (e.g. the Santander Group). Many faculty members already have highly developed links with other European universities and institutions, and have been involved in a wide array of EU programmes, such as ERASMUS (SOCRATES), LINGUA, TEMPUS, TACIS, ACE, and therefore have much experience in networking the University. The Centre also has links with institutions such as the Sussex European Institute (University of Sussex), the Centre for European Studies (Sofia), the College of Europe (Bruges), the Centre for European Studies (University of Nancy). the European Institute of Public Administration (Maastricht), the Institute of European Affairs, (Dublin) Queen's University, (Belfast) South Bank University (London) Universities of Lund and Uppsala (Sweden) University of Washington and Munster University (Germany). |

Increasing numbers of postgraduate students
are associated with the Centre for European Studies and it is hoped that
additional resources may make it possible, to expand the number of
research students working within the Centre. Their topics of research
include: EU regional policy and the Committee of the Regions, democracy
and the referendum experience in the EU, the enlargement of the EU, the EU
and democracy in Central and Eastern Europe, EU social policy, the EU and Japan in the GATT
negotiations, US-European relations during the 1980s, the regional impact
of the channel tunnel and the role of the European Council. The students
are largely housed in the Centre for European Studies designated research
area in the Foundation Building where they have desks and
computers.
Among research projects in which the Centre participates as a major partner are:
