As Chairman of the UL 40 Steering Committee I wish to welcome you to what I know will be a wonderful year of celebration in the life of the University of Limerick. It will be a time for looking back, revisiting old memories, dabbling in nostalgia but also a time for looking forward with enthusiasm to the rich possibilities that await us in the next 40 years.
The pioneering spirit on which this University was built has stood the test of time, it has drawn like-minded individuals to work with us, to support us: it is evident in the many achievements and accomplishments of our graduates, our staff and our students. One hundred and thirteen early pioneers came to Plassey in 1972 full of innovative ideas, brave and enthusiastic for what they knew would be a different but exciting journey. Almost 60,000 graduates later and UL is still innovative, still offering students a different and exciting educational journey. We continue to take seriously our responsibility to promote the economic, educational, social and cultural development of Limerick City. A strong and enduring sense of connection to our communities has always been a defining feature of UL and we are delighted to welcome the people of Limerick to their University throughout the year.
Despite the current economic climate the University of Limerick is still punching above its weight, still making ground breaking decisions, still accomplishing what many consider to be impossible. We ought to be very proud of this institution and this year’s celebrations are an important part of saying ‘thank you’ to the many supporters and friends who have helped us to achieve so much.
I hope you enjoy the events of this year and I am confident that we can continue to count on your support and encouragement as we look to the next 40 years in the life of the University of Limerick.
