My research interests lie in cultural and economic sociology focusing specifically on media analysis, social exclusion and poverty.
Initially, I was interested in the sociology of community development in both rural and urban Ireland. My research career began by examining the workings of Muintir na Tire in the period 1931-1988. It focused in particular on how class conflict affected attempts at rural community development.
Since the mid 1990s my research has focused on media representations of poverty and social exclusion in the print and broadcast media in Ireland. This work has led to further collaborative research on the perspectives of Irish media professionals on social exclusion issues as well as a long-term research project on media coverage of and public beliefs about immigrants in Ireland.
Currently, I am researching in the area of the sociology of popular culture - with a particular emphasis on fan culture(s).
