Biography

Thomas Newe (BEng., PhD, MIEEE) was born in Westmeath, Ireland in 1967. He received his Honours Degree in Computer Engineering in 1991. Following this, he worked as a senior software engineer with The Microelectronics Applications Centre (MAC), Ireland. He was awarded his PhD in 2003 from the University of Limerick for work on Formal Verification Logics for use in security protocol design.
He is currently a Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Limerick, group leader of the IoT/WSN Security activities in the Optical Fibre Sensors Research Centre (www.ofsrc.ul.ie) and the Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (www.cris.ul.ie), a PI in Confirm (www.confirm.ie), and FI in the MaREI (www.marei.ie), and Lero (www.lero.ie) SFI National Research Centres.
Tom sits on the board of Cyber Ireland (www.cyberireland.ie) and leads the Cyber Security industry upskilling activities in UL with the Cyber Skills (www.cyberskills.ie) HEA HCI Pillar 3 initiative.
He has graduated 17 PhD students in the general area of Security for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and currently, he has 6 registered students working in the areas of secure IoT for marine systems, medical environments, and Smart Manufacturing.
His areas of research include: Security for I4.0, Cyber-Physical System (CPS) Security, IoT, Wireless Sensor Networks, Operating Systems, Cryptography/Encryption Algorithms, Data Security, Network Security and Formal Verification Methods.

In the past two years the intake figures have doubled and this is due to the effort put into school visits and marketing initiatives such as a new course brochure. For the first time in over 7 years I expect the first year intake figures to pass 20 students. This includes CAO applicants and Mature applicants.
  • 2007 Environment Committee, Responsible for update and maintenance of committee web page from 2007 to 2010.
  • 1998 ECE Programme REview committee, Wrote module descriptions for many of the programming/software modules in the ECE department. The Cloud Computing (ET4077) and Mobile Applications Development (ED5042) are two recent modules.

  • School Visits 1994- Present Visit feeder schools to promote Science and Engineering Courses.
  • Open Days 1994- Present Manning of ECE courses stand. These days are necessary in order to promote our courses to second-level students and endeavour to increase our first-year intake figures and to recruit better students.
  • Graduate Evening 2009- Present Graduate Recruiting During these evenings recent graduates speak to prospective students about our courses and the job opportunities available. My role has been in getting past graduates to come and talk. To date, these have been successful with numbers attending in the region of 60 students and parents.

  • Mature Students Access Meeting (Outreach) 2009- Presents ECE BSc Course presenter. Every year I present to the students from the mature student access programme that are considering our course. This has resulted in an increase in mature students to our BSc programmes (currently we have approximately 2-4 mature students in each year of LM083 and LM080).
  • The Cyber Security Academy funding is a joint application between the Cyberskills partners, UL, MTU, and TUDublin). Cybersecurity is of critical importance to our society and economy and skills shortages exist both in Ireland and globally. This SFI Discover Programme funding will allow us (CyberSkills partners) to engage a new generation in the field of cybersecurity. The Cyber Security Academy is a unique opportunity for secondary school students to gain practical insight into the technical aspects of cybersecurity, and to practice the skills that they will learn throughout the week on the programme using a state-of-the-art cyber range. A cyber range is a platform that allows for the simulation of real-life cybersecurity challenges. Career champions are embedded into the program planning, through career talks at the Academy and schools cybersecurity challenge competition and integrated with other more established careers events such as iWISH, SFI Smart Futures and STEM South West. This programme will create a pipeline of future cybersecurity students for UL and the Cyberskills partners and facilitate the education of future professionals that have an understanding of the personal attributes and technical skills required to pursue a career in cybersecurity.
