>> University of Limerick carries out both fundamental and applied research in Institutes & Centres  and Faculties & Departments with inter-and multidisciplinary focus.

>> University of Limerick continuously strives for international excellence. In the past year, UL was awarded €38 million in research funding.  Our new Bernal research institute is an €86 million science and engineering research institute with over 260 researchers in advanced materials, manufacturing and process engineering and fluid dynamics. The Lero software institute hosts 90 PhDs and 46 postdoctoral researchers and an additional 71 new fellowships will commence in 2017. Other major centres of research focus on Mathematics Applications, Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceuticals, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Composites, Dairy Processing, Health Research and Food for Health Ireland.

>> Half of our research staff ie 49% come from abroad.

>> University of Limerick has been very successful in Marie Curie funding to date with several Initial Training Networks, Fellowships and COFUND awards e.g. 26 incoming fellowships beginning in 2017.

>> University of Limerick has an outstanding track record in innovation and commercialisation activities. In 2016, 38 new invention disclosures were received from our researchers, 10 new patent applications were filed, 2 new campus companies were formed and 25 technology transfer agreements were signed with companies. UL campus companies have attracted in excess of €50 million in investment funding employing over 80 people. In 2015, UL was awarded a maximum 5-Star rating in innovation (patents, spin-off companies and industrial research by QS Stars™

>> University of Limerick continually invests in its infrastructure, completing in 2017: Clinical Education and Research Centre- a joint venture between UL and Irelands Health Service Executive at University Hospital Limerick campus. This is a 3,400m2 facility providing laboratory, tutorial, library, research and administration spaces for clinical education and our Health Research Institute. A major extension to the Glucksman Library of 7,500m2
