Researchers at University of Limerick and University Hospital Limerick have identified several new genetic biomarkers which better predict outcomes for patients with bowel/colorectal cancer. The research team identified genes that are predictors of cancer recurrence and can also help to identify a patients’ suitability to specific types of chemotherapy.
It is estimated that at least 1 in 5 hospitalised adults develop Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). Emerging evidence suggests that AKI: is under-recognised in clinical practice; predicts an accelerated risk of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), and may be a risk amplifier for many other chronic diseases with death rates in excess of 20%.
Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation Damien English TD, recently unveiled Dr. Anthony Maher, former researcher at the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC) in University of Limerick and member of Kerry’s Senior Football All Ireland winning team, as the winner of Science Foundation Ireland’s Research Image of the Year competition for his picture ‘Starship Enterprise’ at the SFI Science Summit in Athlone. His image will appear on the front of the 2014 SFI Annual Report.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton, and Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation Damien English announced Government and industry funding of €245 million for the establishment of five new world-class SFI Research Centres in Ireland. Lero – The Irish Software Engineering Research Centre which is head-quartered at the University of Limerick is among the 5 world-class research centres to benefit from this announcement.
UL research solves major scientific challenge which unlocks potential for rapid diagnostics tools
Research from the University of Limerick has unlocked a major scientific challenge which has exciting potential for point of care medical tests. The research entitled ‘Nanoelectrical analysis of single molecules and atomic-scale materials at the solid/liquid interface’ is reported online in Nature Materials.
A report by University of Limerick academics ‘A Life Free From Fear’ Legislating for Hate Crime in Ireland: An NGO Perspective has been launched in Dublin by Senator Ivana Bacik. The report outlines the true extent of hate crime in Ireland today and how it affects many communities. Report authors Jennifer Schweppe (School of Law), Dr Amanda Haynes and Dr James Carr (Department of Sociology) present the experiences and perspectives of NGOs who deal on a regular basis with the challenge of hate crime, and provide an analysis of the efficacy of Irish legislation in combating hate crime.
A University of Limerick research project which aims to develop new ways to join components has been awarded €1.35 million funding through the Science Foundation Ireland Investigators Programme. Principal Investigator, Dr Conor McCarthy explains the significance of this project: “Nuts and bolts have been used for centuries to join safety-critical structures together. However, bolts require holes to be drilled in the assembled parts and this leads to a drastic reduction in their ability to withstand the forces of nature and impacts from everyday use.”
Four University of Limerick researchers have been awarded in excess of €1.85 million in funding by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) as part of today’s €23 million funding announcement by Minister for Research and Innovation, Sean Sherlock. The UL research awards included Career Development Awards to Dr Pat Kiely, Dr Sarah Hudson and Dr Christophe Silien and a Starting Investigator Research Grant to Dr Stephen Dooley.
