Two of the world’s top 20 chemists, Professor Michael O’Keeffe, Arizona State University and Dr Michael Zaworotko, Bernal Chair of Crystal Engineering, Bernal Institute University of Limerick, pictured on campus recently as part of the Bernal Institute Distinguished Lecture Series.
Professor O’Keeffe, who was listed at third in the world in chemistry, delivered the lecture “Beautiful Geometry of Crystal Structures”. Dr Zaworotko, Bernal Chair of Crystal Engineering and Science Foundation Ireland Research Professor also made the top 20 in the same list.
Dr. Zaworotko has published over 390 peer reviewed papers, review articles and patents that have been cited >32,000 times. In 2011 Thomson-Reuters listed him as the 20th highest impact chemist since 2000 and in 2014, 2015 and 2016 he was listed as a highly cited researcher also by Thomson Reuters.
The Bernal Institute focuses its activities on the thematic areas of Advanced Materials, Manufacturing and Process Engineering, and Fluid Dynamics, selected to complement strategic priorities at the University of Limerick, building on existing competencies as well as aligning with national and international priority research areas. The Bernal Institute helps to nurture Ireland’s research leaders of the future and support Ireland’s progress for many generations to come. The Institute has already established a significant track record in generating research impact. The Institute hosts a number of leading research centres, including: the Science Foundation Ireland funded Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC) and three Enterprise Ireland/ IDA funded Technology Centres: Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC), Dairy Processing Technology Centre (DPTC) and the Irish Composites Centre (IComp).
