University of Limerick academic, Dr Trevor Young, Department of Mechanical, Aeronautical and Biomedical Engineering has been appointed to the Scientific Committee of the European Commission's Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking (CSJU) research programme. Clean Sky 2 is the largest and most ambitious aeronautical research programme ever undertaken in Europe. It is structured as a public-private partnership with a total budget of almost €4 billion (2014 to 2024).
Information Technology Shared Services, a Division of Johnson & Johnson Services, Inc., plans to create up to 100 new jobs through the creation of a Development Centre on the University of Limerick campus. Making the announcement Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD was joined by Minister for Finance Michael Noonan TD and Minister for Education, Jan O’Sullivan TD at the University of Limerick.
Researchers at University of Limerick and University Hospital Limerick have identified several new genetic biomarkers which better predict outcomes for patients with bowel/colorectal cancer. The research team identified genes that are predictors of cancer recurrence and can also help to identify a patients’ suitability to specific types of chemotherapy.
It is estimated that at least 1 in 5 hospitalised adults develop Acute Kidney Injury (AKI). Emerging evidence suggests that AKI: is under-recognised in clinical practice; predicts an accelerated risk of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), and may be a risk amplifier for many other chronic diseases with death rates in excess of 20%.
Professor Mike Hinchey , Director of Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre at UL has recently been elected a member of Academy of Europe, a cross-Europe academy of high achieving academics. Professor Hinchey is the first UL faculty member to be accorded this honour and is one of the academy’s 10 youngest members.
Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation Damien English TD, recently unveiled Dr. Anthony Maher, former researcher at the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC) in University of Limerick and member of Kerry’s Senior Football All Ireland winning team, as the winner of Science Foundation Ireland’s Research Image of the Year competition for his picture ‘Starship Enterprise’ at the SFI Science Summit in Athlone. His image will appear on the front of the 2014 SFI Annual Report.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton, and Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation Damien English announced Government and industry funding of €245 million for the establishment of five new world-class SFI Research Centres in Ireland. Lero – The Irish Software Engineering Research Centre which is head-quartered at the University of Limerick is among the 5 world-class research centres to benefit from this announcement.
The Annual UL Hospital Limerick Research Symposium featured world-leading research championed from the Mid-West region.
