SSPC, the SFI Research Centre for Pharmaceuticals hosted at University of Limerick, has been awarded Pharma Research Centre of the Year and the Pharma Education and Training Award at the 2019 Pharma Industry Awards.

The awards recognise SSPC, a national research centre led by UL at the Bernal Institute, for its outstanding national and international industry-academia, inter-industry collaborations.

New material developed at University of Limerick could ‘help solve global water crisis’

A revolutionary new material developed at University of Limerick could “help solve the global water crisis” by producing water from air, even in the most remote of locations.

Professor Michael Zaworotko, Bernal Chair of Crystal Engineering and Science Foundation of Ireland Research Professor at University of Limerick’s Bernal Institute, has developed the crystalline material after decades of research.

His lab discovered a material with favourable properties for absorbing and releasing water from the atmosphere that could revolutionise dehumidification systems in buildings and the availability of water in regions of drought.

A new study by researchers at University of Limerick has found that a “personalised approach” to back pain treatment can have a significant impact.

Back pain is the most costly and disabling health condition in the world, with the costs of back pain exceeding that of cancer and diabetes combined. For decades, most treatments for back pain have had little or no impact on the condition.

However, the UL study, which has just been published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, has shown that there may be cause for more optimism.

CONFIRM, the world-leading SFI research centre in Smart Manufacturing hosted by University of Limerick, has launched SMART 4.0, a postdoctoral fellowship programme aimed at providing world-class training and research opportunities to 16 fellows in the area of Smart Manufacturing.

Nature Masterclass - Scientific Writing and Publishing

Learn how to write and publish a great paper

The University of Limerick has recently purchased an institutional subscription to the Nature Masterclasses online course in ‘Scientific Writing and Publishing’. The course is taught by Editors from the Nature Research journals and covers the entire scientific publishing process – from writing a paper to publication. Note that the course focuses on publishing within the natural sciences, but is useful for researchers in all disciplines. Access is available to all UL students (undergraduate and postgraduate), postdocs, research staff, faculty, staff and administrators free of charge.

Research Week 2019

The 3 – 7 December 2018  saw UL’s inaugural Research Week take place across campus. The programme involved 24 events from seminars, to panel discussions, networking sessions to workshops, which involved over 730 registered attendees across all faculties. The events covered a wide range of themes: publishing, open science, communication, research integrity, a creative showcase and career development.

CONFIRM, the world-leading SFI research centre in Smart Manufacturing hosted by University of Limerick, is to break ground on its bespoke new €3.1m headquarters at Park Point.

With a tender process now concluded, CONFIRM will commence building works at its new headquarters, a bespoke 1619 m2 facility based in Park Point, adjacent to UL.
