Liberal Peacebuilding: The Challenge of Gender Inclusive Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) in Liberia
Helen Basini (PhD candidate, Department of Politics & Public Administration, University of Limerick)

Abstract: This presentation will explore the DDR process through the lens of the international peacebuilding agenda and its underlying liberal assumptions of promoting democracy and economic freedom. It will consider how the limitations of the liberal peace approach manifest practically, in particular how DDR programmes are exclusionary for certain vulnerable groups such as women and girls. Finally it will examine how revisions to the liberal peace agenda and affiliated policies (UNSCR 1325 and gender mainstreaming) affect women associated with fighting forces (WAFFs) and the DDR programme in the case of Liberia.  Tentative results will be proposed from interviews and focus groups with 70 WAFFs.

Presentation followed by tea/coffee and discussion. All welcome!
