This research project focuses on the international frameworks for aid, debt and poverty reduction and their impact on state-society relations and democracy in three Latin American countries. This study examines the dynamics of the Poverty Reduction Strategy process and its outcomes in Bolivia, Honduras and Nicaragua in the period from 1999 to 2005 in order to identify and critically assess the theoretical assumptions on which it is based, and their adequacy to meet the development objectives set by the process. As part of this study field trips to Bolivia, Honduras and Nicaragua were carried out in 2009 to interview key informants who were involved in the Poverty Reduction Strategy processes in each country. This research is funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
