Welcome to the Physical Education & Sport Sciences Department

The Physical Education and Sport Sciences (PESS) department is one of 6 departments in the Faculty of Education and Health Sciences at the University of Limerick (UL) and is one of the fastest growing departments on campus in the Education and Health Sciences Faculty. The PESS department originates from the National College of Physical Education (NCPE), established in 1972, which later became part of Thomond College of Education (1976) and eventually became part of UL (1991).

The PESS department has a high reputation and has been recognised nationally as a leader in the delivery of physical education and sport science programmes. The department hosts two undergraduate full time Bachelor of Science programmes, Physical Education, and Sport and Exercise Sciences. Through the National Council for Exercise and Fitness (NCEF), the PESS department delivers a Certificate, Diploma and Degree in Exercise and Health Fitness. The popularity of the PESS programmes attracts the highest qualified students to UL at the undergraduate level and exposes them to an exceptional sporting environment. In addition, the department also hosts three graduate programmes.

With it's growing demand and interest in academic programmes that relate to sport, science of sport, health and physical activity, the PESS department's mission is to promote and advance learning and knowledge in the area of physical education and sport sciences through innovative teaching and research
