Please Note - NS6302 Infection Prevention and Control in Healthcare module is now closed to new applications. The module will run again in Academic Year 2021/22 Autumn semester and early application is advised.
The Department of Nursing and Midwifery offers a number of continuing professional education modules, which are listed below. The modules are offered to support the adult and flexible learning needs of nurses and midwives and can be undertaken without registering for a full postgraduate nursing programme. Students can take up to two modules of study without enrolling on a full programme. Programme enrolment occurs each Aug/Sept and full programme fees apply.
Modules successfully completed by students have designated ECT credits and if students subsequently register for a postgraduate programme of which these modules are part of, they may apply to the University for exemptions for the completed modules and carry grades forward.
The modules listed below are offered on Tuesdays during Autumn and Spring semesters. You will need to contact the office in advance of each academic semester to inform that you are registered for a CPE module, and to receive details on schedules, times and location of when modules are taught.
To apply for a continuing professional education module, complete form and return to the Fees Office at the University of Limerick, with the appropriate fee. Some modules will only be offered when sufficient numbers of students are registered for those modules, per semester. For more detailed information on these modules please contact here.

Infection Prevention and Control in Healthcare The interprofessional module introduces students to the core concepts of infection prevention and control in healthcare practice, across all health and social care settings. The module is designed to enable healthcare professionals to become champions of evidence-based infection prevention and control practice. The module provides specialist teaching, delivered in conjunction with health service partner organisations, including, University of Limerick Hospital Group and the Health Service Executive Mid-West Community Healthcare, CHO 3, demonstrating a contemporary and multidisciplinary approach to infection prevention and control education.

Leading and Managing Infection Prevention and Control This module will enable students to consolidate prior knowledge and skills and prepare for assuming a greater role in leading and managing infection prevention and control strategies. The purpose of the module is to provide students with an opportunity to critically appraise and evaluate current infection prevention and control practice approaches, whilst preparing to champion and lead infection prevention and control best practice in the workplace.

Managing and Co-Ordinating Perioperative Nursing This module focuses on key aspects of organising, co-ordinating and managing the patient experience in peri-operative settings. The module addresses key issues relating to interpersonal relationships among the multidisciplinary team. Particular attention is given to planned and emergency surgical care and the role of the peri-operative nurse. |

Particular attention is given to attending to the physical, psychosocial, emotional needs of the patient emphasising the need for effective communication and the use of specific interventions and approaches. |

Therapeutic Interventions in Palliative Care The module examines advancing roles in the application of palliative care perspectives in advanced assessment and management of total pain. Specific disease states and therapeutic interventions to alleviate symptoms across the continuum of a life-limiting illness are explored. Emphasis is placed on the significance of altered mobility, fatigue and rehabilitation in palliative care. Palliative care perspectives in death and dying are explored and critically evaluated.

Nursing interventions and supports for the adult in the context of collaborative care arrangements and multidisciplinary practice are analysed. |

Managing and Co-ordinating of Gerontology Care The purpose of this module is to provide the student with the opportunity to develop knowledge and expertise in the provision of rehabilitation nursing to the older person.
