Royal Society of Chemistry
Teaching Award

Dr Peter Childs

Congratulations to Dr Peter Childs, Dept of Chemical & Environmental Sciences who has recently been awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Teaching Award 2002-2003 in recognition of a lifetime devoted to chemical education during which he has influenced not only students but a large number of teachers with his energy, enthusiasm and dedication.

The citation goes on to say that his contribution has been prodigious. Whilst teaching at the University of Limerick he has also worked at the Director of the Schools Information Centre on the Irish Chemical Industry and, for twenty years, served as Editor of Chemistry in Action with three editions each year. Central to Peter's work has been the recognition that the provision of high quality materials, which stimulate and interest both students and teachers, encourages able, enthusiastic students to continue to study chemistry during their higher education courses. For a number of years Peter has been a member of committees responsible for the organisation of international conferences. He has recently been appointed Chairman of the Federation of European Chemical Societies (FECS) Education Council.

Peter has been involved in promoting links between education and the chemical industry for more than twenty years. He has wide experience of these activities, the problems of organising and financing them, and of analysing and evaluating their aims, objectives and outcomes. Peter is one of the very best chemical educators, energetic, prolific and respected. We can learn much from him.
