UL Students Capture Gold at the National Track and Field Championships
Monday, 8th August 2011UL students and siblings, Thomas (1st year BEng Mechanical Engineering)and Jessie Barr (4th year BSc Psychology) claimed gold in the 400m hurdle events at the recent Woodies DIY AAI Senior Track and Field Championships in Dublin.
19 year old, Thomas Barr broke the Irish junior and Under-23 records with a time of 50.06 seconds, which not only knocked nearly half a second off his own recent PB but is a Championship Best Performance.Jessie Barr gave an impressive performance running a time of 57.38 to beat defending champion Justine Kinney. Thomas and Jessie compete with Waterford based club Ferrybank AC .
UL was very well represented at the Championships with Niamh Whelan (3rd year BSc Sports and Exercise Science) who came 2nd in the 100m and 200m. Timmy Crowe (National Council for Exercise and Fitness) came 3rd in the Mens 400 Hurdles and Denis Finnegan (MSc in International Management and Global Business) took 2nd in the Mens Triple Jump.
The University of Limerick track and field athletes are trained by Dr Drew Harrison, Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science and Hayley Harrison, Coaching Education Officer, Coaching Ireland.
