University of Limerick based Professor, Bashar Nuseibeh of Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant worth €2.5m over five years.  The programme on adaptive security and privacy will be run collaboratively between Lero at the University of Limerick and the Open University in the UK.

The research will focus on privacy and security threats arising from the use of new mobile and ubiquitous technologies such as smart phones and cloud-based services. It will investigate techniques for developing software systems that protect users and their assets from the changing privacy and security threats that face them.

ERC Advanced Grants allow a small number of top researchers across Europe to pursue ground breaking, high risk projects that open new directions in their current  research fields or take them into new areas. Prof Nuseibeh, who joined Lero in 2009, will lead research teams at the Open University and the University of Limerick. He is also a Visiting Professor at Imperial College London and at the National Institute of Informatics, Tokyo.
