"Exercise interventions for people with MS; Moving from short term gains to long term behaviour change"

A presentation by our invited speaker:

Dr. Susan Coote
Department of Physiotherapy
University of Limerick

All are welcome

Abstract:
The presentation will outline the results of the Getting the Balance Right project,  a collaboration between MS Ireland and Dr Susan Coote's team in the Physiotherapy dept at UL. While the evidence clearly shows a benefit from exercise interventions, gains are generally not maintained at follow up. As MS is a chronic progressive condition with an early age of diagnosis it is important to find management strategies that not only bring about positive short term effect, but change exercise and physical activity behaviours in the long term. US research suggests that self efficacy for exercise plays a key role, however preliminary research here suggests a weak relationship between physical activity levels and exercise self efficacy. This presentation aims to stimulate interdisciplinary discussion on how future management strategies can be developed to positively influence exercise and physical activity behaviours in the long term.
