Lecturers at the University of Limerick have launched an educational dvd on the use of hand massage to alleviate anxiety for people with dementia. The project named ‘Tabhair dom do Lámh’ is a collaboration between the Department of Nursing & Midwifery, Irish World Academy of Music & Dance, UL and St Camillus Hospital, Limerick and Teresa Tuohy (RPN, RGN).

In Ireland, over 44,000 people are affected by Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. The purpose of this programme is to alleviate anxiety, stress and agitation while connecting between the carer/nurse and the patient.

Dympna Tuohy, Department of Nursing & Midwifery explains; “Many of us, both as nurses and carers, will be caring for people with dementia either in hospital, continuing care units or at home. For people living with dementia, their world and their perceptions of it can be a changed and often unfamiliar place. This can cause anxiety and distress. Research has indicated that hand massage can be used to alleviate this anxiety. Hand massage promotes calmness, relaxation, sleep and comfort in patients.”

‘Tabhair dom do Lámh’ is aimed at nurses, carers and healthcare professionals involved in caring for older people with dementia. The programme will be rolled out in health care organisations in the region over the coming twelve months. The video is also available to view free online here
