“The Biology of Cancer” by Dr Patrick Kiely
Dr Kiely who was recently elected to the council of the Irish Association for Cancer Research (IACR) will deliver a talk entitled “The Biology of Cancer”. This talk is aimed at the general public and it is designed as an overview of the disease. It will take the audience on a journey right through the Hallmarks of cancer, the causes of cancer, cancer prevention and cancer diagnosis and will describe how some cancer treatments work. The primary focus is on Breast Cancer; however other cancers, such as prostate cancer and leukaemia will also be discussed. Dr Kiely will briefly describe the work being carried out by the researchers in his Laboratory in the University of Limerick who are trying to establish new therapeutic targets for cancer. Dr Kiely is a Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences, UL and is Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Cellular & Molecular Biology and a member of the Materials and Surface Science Institute (MSSI). This talk is in collaboration with the Institute of Biology of Ireland (IOBI) and the NCE-MSTL. “The Biology of Cancer” will take place in the NCE-MSTL lecture room, A1-065 in the University of Limerick, on the 20th of October 2011 at 7pm.
