Administrative/ Biographical History: Dancer and choreographer Mairéad Vaughan (b. 1971) graduated from Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Leeds with a degree in Performing Arts (Dance) and from the University of Limerick with an MA in Contemporary Dance Performance.  In 1999, she and composer Dara O’Brien co-founded Shakram Music and Dance Company (later renamed Shakram Dance Company) following their return from India and their respective studies in Indian classical dance.  The company’s distinctive aesthetic drew heavily on Bharatanatyam, a South Indian classical dance form, and was further informed by Vaughan’s studies of ethnic dance in Peru, Equador, Malaysia, Borneo, and Thailand and the rhythmical, gestural, and spatial nature of these art forms.  Shakram Dance company toured nationally and internationally and created thirteen original dance works before dissolving in 2014.  Since then, Mairéad Vaughan has continued her career as a dance artist, choreographer, researcher, and lecturer.  She is the recipient of a number of Arts Council awards and bursaries, including Dance Ireland’s Choreographic Development Initiative in 2008, and an Arts Council bursary through four consecutive years to fund her doctorate in Arts Practice (2016).
