Joan Davis

Context

Joan Davis was born in Dublin in 1945. Her dance career started in 1974 with Terez Nelson and shortly afterwards she commenced her pioneering work of establishing a contemporary dance company: Dublin Contemporary Dance Theatre (DCDT) and Studio. During this time Joan taught, choreographed and performed extensively throughout Ireland. In 1989 when DCDT closed, Joan embarked on alternative approaches to dance, movement and bodywork. She created a unique approach to movement, voice, the body and spirituality, and the making of art and performance. This work is now called Maya Lila; Sanskrit words loosely interpreted to mean 'illusion' and 'play'. Joan now lives and works in her small holistic centre in Bray, County Wicklow, which she established in 1996.
