UL has exchange partnerships with approximately 50 universities worldwide. Students may apply for an academic placement in any of these institutions instead of an Erasmus placement in an EU university. While an academic placement is usually for one semester, in exceptional circumstances it can last for a full academic year.

Opportunities for academic placements exist in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Brazil, Singapore, Japan, Mexico, Uruguay and Thailand. The full range of partner universities can be viewed on this interactive map

For an exchange to take place, a signed memorandum of understanding or bilateral agreement must be in place between UL and the partner university. Students receive full recognition for study at the partner university on delivery of a transcript to certify their results. The transcript is normally obtained by attending classes for the full semester and by passing continuous assessment and/or examinations.
