The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) at the University of Limerick introduced the Summer School programme in June 2002 with the launch of the first Summer School in Irish Life and Literature. The programme has grown significantly since then, and 99 students came to the 2014 Summer Schools.  It has now expanded to include the Department of Mechanical, Aeronautical & Biomedical Engineering which is one of three Engineering departments in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Kemmy Business School and the Architecture Department.

Course Options

Twelve separate course options will be on offer at the 2015 Summer Schools. These options are:

Summer Schools in Irish Studies

The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) provide seven options to choose from in 2015 outlined below. Students study one course option on a full-time basis over a three week period, with a choice from the seven courses across the areas of Irish Literature, History, Sociology, Media and Law

  • Irish Writing in English (6 ECTS)
  • Visual Culture in Ireland 1400 – 1950 (6 ECTS)
  • Sociological Perspectives on Irish Society (6 ECTS)
  • Screening Ireland: Ireland in Film and Television (6 ECTS)
  • Law in Ireland (6 ECTS)
  • Creative Writing (6 ECTS)
  • Irish Myths and Legends (6 ECTS)

Summer School in Engineering


The Summer School in Technical Communication for Engineers will be run by the Department of Mechanical, Aeronautical & Biomedical Engineering which is one of three Engineering departments in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Summer Schools in Business

The Summer Schools in Business will be run by the Kemmy Business School which is one of the faculties at the University of Limerick. The KBS is a member of a number of key international organisations including the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM) .  The School also signed up in 2008 for the UN's initiative on responsible management education - Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), and was the first Irish Business School to do so.

  • Corporate Social Responsibility (6 ECTS)
  • Business Tools for Social Projects (6 ECTS)

Entry Requirements and Level


Minimum entry requirement: GPA cum. 2.5. The Summer Schools courses will be taught at ‘300’ level and will be open to students who have completed their freshman year at the time of enrolment.
