Useful Information

Before travelling, it is advisable to consult the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website which provides valuable travel advice for all European countries.

Students are advised to consult the relevant embassy's website (e.g. the French embassy in Dublin if travelling to France) where information for Irish citizens can usually be found. Students should also consult the website of the host university for information on applications, accommodation, semester dates, etc.

Please remember to take out proper medical and travel insurance to cover your Erasmus placement abroad. There are three steps involved:

  1. Obtain the European Health Insurance Card by completing the form on http://www.ehic.ie/ and sending it to your local Health Board (no charge). This card entitles you to free accident and emergency treatment in EU countries.
  2. Take out or extend your already existing private health care to cover the period abroad.
  3. Take out travel insurance, if necessary, to allow you to be transported home in the case of an illness.
