Health & Safety Training
The courses listed below are available within the University. Some of the courses, as indicated by * are run every year or semester. All of the courses may be held as and when a department requires by contacting the Safety Office to arrange a suitable date;

TRAINING COURSE LIST:
Safety Induction Lecture (Students)* During Orientation Week all first year students, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level, are expected to attend the safety induction lecture. The lecture content includes advice and instruction on dealing with possible hazards that may be encountered while studying at the University. The course format includes:
Safety legislation, safety statement and individual responsibilities. Procedures to be followed in the event of fire together with procedures to follow when the alarm is sounded. Emergency evacuation procedures, assembly point locations and emergency telephone number. Reporting hazards, accidents and ill health. First aid arrangements Smoking policy. Dates: September each year Time: 10 Minutes Trainer: Student Personnel Services
Safe Use of Display Screen Equipment / Office Safety This course is suitable for people who work with visual display units (VDU's). The course format includes:
Summary of the Display Screen Regulations. Answers to questions that are more often asked about VDU's and health. Adjustments users can make to work stations and screens to make them more comfortable and easy to use. Advice on office safety. Dates: Course provided as requested. Time: 1.5 Hours. Trainer: Safety Officer
Manual Handling* This course is a requirement for all staff involved in lifting and handling and those supervising manual handling operations. The course format includes:
Information on the law relating to manual handling. Information on the anatomy and biomechanics of the spine and muscles, and how injuries takes place from manual handling. Information on good handling techniques and practice at applying these techniques. Dates: As required and when requested Time: 2 Hours Trainer: Safety Officer
Occupational First Aid Certificate* Occupational first aid training courses are provided to maintain an adequate number of first aiders throughout the campus. The course is given over three days and it concludes with a qualifying examination. The certificate is valid for two years. The course format includes:
Identification, as far as possible, the injury or the nature of the illness affecting a casualty. Giving early, appropriate and adequate treatment. Arranging for the removal of the casualty to the medical centre or hospital, or to the care of a doctor or home. Dates: Course provided as required Time: 3 Days Trainer: Agency approved by the HSA
Occupational First Aid Refresher Course* This is a one day refresher course (Level 5 FETAC certification) which must be attended within two years of certification by existing occupational first aiders. The course is concluded with a short examination and the certificate is valid for two years.

Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment This course is suitable for Departmental Safety Advisors and members of Departmental Safety Committees. The course format includes:
Legislative reasons why we need to carry out risk assessments. Risk assessment at UL - "Five Steps to Risk Assessment" Completing the UL Risk Assessment Sheet. Follow-up Dates: Course provided as requested. Time 1.5 Hours Trainer: Safety Officer
Fire Safety Training* This course is suitable for all staff in every area of the University. The course format includes:
Introduction to types, sizes, application and operation of fire fighting equipment in use at the University. Discussion on fire prevention, fire development and containment, showing of fire safety video and introduction to UL Emergency Evacuation Procedures. Practical outdoor session featuring "hands-on" training in the use of portable fire extinguishers, fire blankets and first aid hose reels on various fire categories. Dates: February each year. Time: 1.5 Hours Trainer: External Consultants
