The Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 1989 legislated for the establishment of the Health and Safety Authority. The Act requires every employer to ensure the safety, health and welfare of employees regarding the design of the place of work, design of plant and machinery, provision of safe systems of work, control or elimination of hazards, and the services of a "competent person". The course content has been designed to satisfy the knowledge requirements specified in the HETPEP (Harmonising European Training Programmes for Ergonomics Professionals) document.
