The University of Limerick is highly regarded for conducting leading-edge research in key areas such as information and communication technologies, materials and surface science, biosciences, environment & bioengineering and humanities & social sciences. Research income has increased by 300% in the last five years and the number of PhD students has more than doubled during this period. The strategic plan for the future development of the University includes substantial expansion of research activity and envisages investment of over €130 million on research infrastructure.
In addition to 36 research centres based across the faculties, UL has four world-class centres of excellence. These multidisciplinary research institutes offer an extensive range of graduate research opportunities. The University offers Structured PhD’s (explore using navigation above) which incorporate a taught element, generic & transferable skills training, and a research element. Students are encouraged to publish their research, and where applicable to develop patent applications and spin-out companies if possible.
