Security has recently become a top priority as communication and information have become a key factor in economic and societal development. Networks and information systems are now supporting services and carrying data to an extent inconceivable only a few years ago. Concerns about security of electronic networks and information systems have been growing along with the rapid increase in the number of network users and the value of their transactions. Security has now reached a critical point where it represents a prerequisite for the growth of electronic businesses and the functioning of whole economies. Maintaining secure systems and guarding company information are considered critical in today's business environments. Most companies, especially those in banking, defence, e-commerce and telecommunications, are making systems security a top priority. Consequently, there is a great need for skilled professionals who can plan, analyse and implement security measures. The course is offered as a one-year, full-time taught postgraduate programme spanning a single academic year, and requires full-time attendance on campus. The course consists of a taught component and a project.

The course will provide training in techniques of applied mathematics, and will focus largely on mathematical models of real world processes, their formulation in terms of differential equations, and methods of solutions, both numerical and analytical, of the models. A focus of the course will be an emphasis on practical problems which arise in industry, commerce, medicine, as well as the environmental and life sciences. In particular, there will be a close alliance between the course and research problems in industrial applied mathematics, which is a principal research strand underpinning MACSI research.

Localisation makes the multilingual, equal information and knowledge society possible. Localisers adapt and translate digital content (text, images, sound) for people around the world so that they can use IT, access the content available on the global networks, and use services on the world wide web in their language and with their cultural preferences. Localisers develop the technology to automatically translate, test, maintain and process localisation requests. The world-wide localisation market is estimated to be worth US billion and while large multi-national digital publishers such as Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, SAP, Google and Symantec are the dominant players, a large number of localisation projects are also undertaken by the hugely dynamic open source community, especially in emerging markets. The MSc in Multilingual Computing and Localisation builds on and now substitutes the second year of the highly successful 2-year GDip/MSc programme originally introduced at the University of Limerick in 1997 as the world's first dedicated and highly respected post-graduate programme in Localisation. The MSc in Multilingual Computing and Localisation is a one year full-time taught programme. It is aimed specifically at students who already have a background in either localisation, computing, language technology, translation or related disciplines. It guides students in their research of the underlying issues in localisation, with an emphasis on technical and business aspects. Students are encouraged to spend some time studying at one of UL's partner universities and work closely with industrial mentors on relevant research projects.

In Ireland, it is estimated that €500 million is lost each year through the absence of a systematic approach to quality management. There is widespread acceptance of poor communications, undefined responsibilities and inefficient work routines. To improve its competitive position on the world stage, Ireland's manufacturing and servicing organisations together with government agencies must adopt and practice world-class management techniques. The Graduate Diploma in Quality Management is a full-time programme Students who attain 2.1 honours standard at the end of the first year may transfer to the Masters Degree programme, which involves completing a one-year, full-time research dissertation. In all cases, the project must be carried out in a manufacturing or service organisation. Approximately 20% of all taught modules are devoted to seminars and case studies presented by external practitioners.
