The Masters course (MEng) in Aeronautical Engineering is based in the Department of Mechanical, Aeronauticaland Biomedical Engineering with mathematics, materials and operations modules coming from other UL departments. This course will be the only one of its kind in the state and will provide training in advanced topics in Aeronautical Engineering. The programme was developed in response to the needs of the aerospace sector, which requires graduates with advanced skills in aeronautical design, analysis and testing. The course also satisfies the Engineers Ireland requirement that a Master's degree in an engineering discipline will be the minimum educational standard for Chartered Engineer status for students graduating in 2013.

A new emphasis on research in the medical devices industry has created a need for engineers and scientists who have a deeper knowledge of biomedical engineering. Already there are a range of undergraduate programmes available to meet this need but many companies have indicated that a Postgraduate qualification in Biomedical Engineering was very desirable. It focusses on an industrial sector in which the island of Ireland has developed a global reputation for quality and excellence. The M.Sc Course is jointly taught by the Faculty of Science + Engineering at the University of Limerick, Trinity College, Dublin and University College Dublin, with Medical Science input to UL from the RCSI. TCD Medical School provides Medical Science inputs for students at TCD. The joint nature of the Course brings together the world class expertise available at the participating institutions in a novel way.

Engineering Product Design as a unique subject area has received little attention in the curricula of undergraduate engineering programmes within Ireland. This is not the case in other European countries, such as Sweden and Switzerland, where the integration of product design, innovation and entrepreneurial studies within conventional engineering programmes has been traditional. It is worth noting that these countries enjoy international reputations for small indigenous high technology operations, which design and manufacture quality products. The course is two years in duration, the first being entirely taught and the second being industry/project based. Students successfully completing Year 1 will be awarded Graduate Diploma and students successfully completing Year 2 will be awarded an Master of Technology.

The Master of Engineering in Computer and Communications Systems will appeal to graduates with primary degrees in electronics or computing who wish to focus on a career in telecommunications, as well as to those with other science or engineering backgrounds who wish to work in the telecommunications industry. The course is offered in two modes, part-time and full-time (subject to demand). The part-time mode facilitates students currently in employment. It is a block-release course over four academic terms, spanning two years. The full-time mode spans a single academic year, and requires full-time attendance on campus. Both versions have the same academic content. The course consists of a taught component and a project.
