Overview

This programme was prepared in consultation with a large panel of academic and industry experts, and takes into account the changes in localisation and internationalisation practice. It caters for new and emerging requirements with a focus on high-quality research output. In addition, while it is centred around the technical aspects of localisation, it recognises the need for localisation professionals to have a good understanding of international business organisation.

In particular, the programme now puts a much stronger emphasis then before on:

• Internationalisation requirements and their implementation;
• The critical analysis and research of translation technologies;
• The automation of the localisation process in what has been called the Localisation Factory;
• Business organisation and international business practices.
• Build on the University's world-wide reputation as the premier academic institution that teaches the best minds in the localisation/internationalisation business;
• Provide individuals interested in acquiring postgraduate academic qualifications in the areas of localisation and internationalisation with an easily accessible programme to do so, in close cooperation with industrial partners;
• Guide and support students conducting independent postgraduate research in technical aspects of localisation/internationalisation taking into account the relevant business processes;
• Prepare students for further PhD studies.

Programme Content

Masters Thesis.
Thesis I, II and III   These modules will, over a period of three consecutive semesters, allow students to prepare, research and write up their dissertation (MSc Thesis). Students will work on their thesis during the year and submit in Semester 3. 

This programme is offered on a full-time and on a one day per week part-time basis. Modules of this programme should be scheduled over two consecutive days.

Students will be encouraged to study abroad with one of UL's partner universities. Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) to develop teaching/research in localisation/internationalisation are currently in place with universities in Africa, South America and Malaysia. This study period abroad can take place between semester one and two.

Students can also study for a longer period with a foreign university that has established an MoU with UL/LRC and successfully complete relevant modules there. They can then apply to the course coordinator to have these modules recognised instead of the corresponding UL modules; they will then just have to complete the outstanding modules at UL.

Entry Requirements

• Primary Degree (level 8) and Graduate Diploma in Localisation Technology (2.1 honours); or
• Primary degree (level 8) in: Computing or related discipline (2.1 honours), or Language Technology or related discipline (2.1 honours); or
• Primary degree (level 8; 2.1 honours) with interview and industry experience: work experience in localisation or 2-month internship with a localisation company.

 WHAT TO INCLUDE WITH YOUR APPLICATION:

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet one of the criteria below (no longer than  two years prior to application):

Acceptable English Language qualifications include the following:
 
Matriculation examinations from European countries where English is presented as a subject and an acceptable level is achieved

• Irish Leaving Certificate English –Ordinary Level Grade D or above
• TOEFL – 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based), 80 (internet based)
• IELTS – Minimum score of 6.5* for Business, Arts, Humanities or Education programmes. Minimum score of 6.0* for Science, Engineering, Informatics or Electronics programmes *with no less than 6 in any one component.
• English Test for English and Academic Purposes (ETAPP) – Grade C1
• GCE ‘O’ level English Language/GCSE English Language – Grade C or above
• University of Cambridge ESOL –Certificate of Proficiency in English - Grade C / Certificate in Advanced English - Grade A
• GCE Examination Boards – Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations – Grade C / Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate – School Certificate Pass 1-6 / University of London Entrance and School Examinations Council – School Certificate Pass 1-6
