Overview
The aim of the programme is to enhance the historical understanding and skills of graduates in history, to extend their capacity for historical research and thereby provide an appropriate basis for advanced research up to, and including, doctoral level.

Programme Content
Autumn Semester. Core obligatory module: Concepts, sources and methods in modern history . Two of the following elective modules: History of the European idea Or The history of women, medieval to modern: sources, methods and approaches Or Material culture and its contexts: Ireland 1690-1914 Or Art, Devotion and Society in Renaissance Europe |
Spring Semester. Core obligatory module: Historical research seminar. One of the following elective modules: Art, Enlightenment and Ideas of the Modern Or Painting and sculpture in Ireland, 1500-1950 Or International history of the twentieth century Or American Foreign Relations. Core obligatory module: Dissertation |

Entry Requirements
A primary degree in which history is a constituent subject, awarded with first or upper second-class honours. Applicants who do not meet those criteria but who have equivalent academic qualifications may be considered.
Entry procedure: Such applicants may be invited for interview and will be asked to bring examples of their written historical work with them and copies of relevant academic transcripts.

English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet one of the criteria below (no longer than two years prior to application):
Acceptable English Language qualifications include the following:
Matriculation examinations from European countries where English is presented as a subject and an acceptable level is achieved
- Irish Leaving Certificate English –Ordinary Level Grade D or above
- TOEFL – 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based), 80 (internet based)
- IELTS – Minimum score of 6.5* for Business, Arts, Humanities or Education programmes. Minimum score of 6.0* for Science, Engineering, Informatics or Electronics programmes *with no less than 6 in any one component.
- English Test for English and Academic Purposes (ETAPP) – Grade C1
- GCE ‘O’ level English Language/GCSE English Language – Grade C or above
- University of Cambridge ESOL –Certificate of Proficiency in English - Grade C / Certificate in Advanced English Grade A
- GCE Examination Boards – Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations – Grade C / Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate – School Certificate Pass 1-6 / University of London Entrance and School Examinations Council – School Certificate Pass 1-6
