Dr Soorej Jose Puthoopparambil
Soorej Jose Puthoopparambil is a Postdoctoral researcher in Migrant Health at the Graduate Entry Medical School. Soorej is currently working in collaboration with the HSE, supporting policy and research around implementation of trained interpreters in Irish healthcare. He will also work with the World Health Organization (WHO) on the Public Health Aspects of Migration in Europe (PHAME) project.
Soorej holds a Master’s and PhD degree in International Health from Uppsala University, Sweden. His PhD project, funded by the EU, was aimed at identifying factors that could mitigate the negative effects of immigration detention on the health of migrants in Sweden and other EU member states. Previously, Soorej has worked with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in evaluating migrant health policies in EU’s southern border states.
He is a member of the Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) research group at UL which has expertise in PPI in research, specifically participatory health research with socially excluded communities.
Soorej uses mixed and participatory research methodologies in his research. He believes a combination of these methods and a transdisciplinary approach facilitates better engagement with stakeholders, easier knowledge translation and implementation of research findings to benefit end-users. His research interests include migration and health, community participation in primary health care, participatory research methods and knowledge translation.
