Introduction:

Professor Deirdre McGrath is Director of Education at the Graduate Entry Medical School and Consultant in Respiratory Medicine in Barrington’s Hospital, Limerick.

Professor McGrath graduated from University College Cork in 1991. She moved to the UK in 1998 where she completed her specialist training. She was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine degree in 2002. While in the UK she worked as a researcher at the National Heart & Lung Institute of the Royal Brompton Hospital and at the Clinical Genomic Unit of the Imperial College of Science Technology & Medicine. She subsequently worked as a substantive Consultant in General & Respiratory Medicine and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medical Education at St Georges University & NHS Trust. She has been awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London and of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland

Professor McGrath was appointed Director of Education to the Graduate Entry Medical School at the University of Limerick in August 2011. This is a role that is pivotal to the delivery of the Graduate Entry Medical School’s educational programme and to determining its future direction. She is also one of four members of the School’s Executive management team. On top of her day job she is a member of the Medical Council’s Basic Medical Qualification and Supervised Division Workgroups as well as an adviser to the Medical Council on the development of its Pre-registration (Pres) exam. She has been appointed to the Executive of the Irish Network of Medical Educators and is also a member of the National Research Group evaluating entry and selection mechanisms to Medicine.

On an international level she is a Harvard Macy Scholar, has been a member of the Association of the Study of Medical Education’s Education Research Group and is the UL-GEMS lead for the EU Life Long Learning Project C2ME looking at the cultural competence of teachers in medical education as well as regularly reviewing for a number of international Medical Education journals.

In addition to her medical education research interests she is also one of the Founding Principal Investigators of 4i, the Centre for Interventions in Infection, Inflammation and Immunity and is Medical Adviser to the University of Limerick’s Optical Fibres Sensors Research Centre.

Professor McGrath’s key research interests re in medical education particularly in the areas of assessment, professionalism, quality assurance and e-learning. Additional research interests include immunity and inflammation and the clinical application of medical devices.
