Lawrence Cleary
BA, MA, PhD Candidate

Lawrence assists academic staff and students with their efforts to become better writers. Alongside his colleague, Íde O’Sullivan, Lawrence designs, facilitates and evaluates writing support initiatives in UL and throughout the Shannon region. Lawrence also works to develop tutors and tutor training and to advance faculty development of student writing and research.

Key areas of responsibility:

  1. Administration of the Writing Centre
  2. Design, development, delivery, assessment and evaluation of the provision of writing development of undergraduate and taught postgraduates at UL (first-year orientation, First Seven Weeks, workshops, writers’ groups, online resources)
  3. Design, development, delivery, assessment and evaluation of WAC/WID in AHSS and Science and Engineering: mentoring and supporting faculty on the integration of writing development into their curricula in these faculties
  4. Supervision of the Administrative assistant: recruitment, documentation (Finance, HR), set-up, training, supervision
  5. Organisation of the National Secondary School Essay-writing Competition and How I Write, Ireland
  6. Research and innovation in writing development regionally, nationally and internationally through providing academic leadership on best practice for the development of writing in higher education
  7. Dissemination of research in high quality and high impact academic publications, including journal articles in internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals and book chapters in seminal books in the area
  8. Design and development of innovative activities externally by leading and contributing to collaborative projects and leading the development of external links in order to ensure the sustainability of the Centre
