General Information
Currently the Faculty of Science and Engineering offers
a wide range of B.Sc. courses. For students who are
unsure of which science course to select, an attractive
option open to them is Science Choice. This
programme allows students to take a variety of
subjects before deciding to choose a specific course.
On entry into the Science Choice programme, 17
different B.Sc. courses will be open to the students.
These are listed as follows;
LM037 B.Sc. Economics and Mathematical Science
LM051 B.Sc. Computer Systems
LM058 B.Sc. Financial Mathematics
LM060 B.Sc. Mathematical Sciences
LM061 B.Sc. Pharmaceutical and Industrial Chemistry
LM063 B.Sc. Production Management
LM064 B.Sc. Industrial Biochemistry
LM065 B.Sc. Applied Physics
LM066 B.Sc. Environmental Science
LM067 B.Sc. Wood Science and Technology
LM068 B.Sc. Food Science and Health
LM080 B.Sc. Electronics
LM083 B.Sc. Mobile Communications and Security
LM086 B.Sc. Health and Safety
LM087 B.Sc. Energy
LM088 B.Sc. Mathematics and Physics
LM110 B.Sc. Multimedia & Computer Games Development
Course Structure
Science Choice offers students a wider exposure to a
variety of subjects relating to different areas of Science.
Students follow a common first year programme of
study and then select one of the above courses at the
end of first year (or earlier in some cases) and
continue on in the normal way (subject to some
restrictions and performance). Therefore, during the
first year students will become well-versed in a range
of science subjects and therefore can make better
choices that suit their particular needs and interests.

Entry Requirements
Applicants are required to hold, at the time of enrolment, the established Leaving Certificate (or an approved
equivalent) with at least Grade C3 in two Higher Level subjects and Grade D3 in four Ordinary or Higher Level
subjects (including Mathematics; Irish or another language; and English).
In addition, applicants are required to hold at least the following in the Leaving Certificate or an approved equivalent:
Grade C3 in Higher Level Mathematics and a Grade D3 in a Higher, Common or Ordinary Level paper in any one of
the following: Physics, Chemistry, Physics with Chemistry, Engineering,Technology,Technical Drawing/Design &
Communication Graphics, Biology,Agricultural Science.
OR Grade B3 in Ordinary Level Mathematics (Grade D3 in Higher Level Mathematics also suffices) and Grade C3 in
one of the following Higher Level papers:Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Physics with Chemistry, Biology,
Agricultural Science.
A Special Mathematics Examination will be offered at UL following the Leaving Certificate results for those students
who did not achieve the Mathematics requirement.
Career Prospects
The career opportunities will depend primarily on the
B.Sc. course chosen by the student during the first year.
Career opportunities range from biotechnology,
pharmaceutical, new product and process development
in food, actuarial services, microelectronic or materials
sectors, safety and energy management, waste
management and control, graphics programming,
software development, web site design and
maintenance, etc.
