General Information
The BSc in Digital Media Design course develops the
technical and analytical skills needed to be successful media
practitioners in both the Irish and global media industries.
The emphasis is on the principles and application of digital
media practice.The programme is inter-disciplinary
because of the convergence of previously distinct areas
such as media and entertainment, software and multimedia,
interaction design, and electronic hardware and
telecommunications.Course delivery includes the use of
both small-group and individual tuition to develop analytical
and creative skills; as well as class and laboratory-based
tutorial learning and seminars.This course addresses an
emerging area of great importance to Irish business.
The aim of the programme in Digital Media Design is to
equip you with degree level competence in new media
technologies.On graduation, you will be capable of making
a significant contribution to the continuing development
and growth of the Digital Media industry in Ireland.
The specific objectives of the programme are:
(i) To provide you with expertise in the use of a variety
of audio and video digital media.
(ii) To provide you with an understanding of the human
and social issues underlying the use of digital media.
(iii) To provide an introduction to the design disciplines
relevant for digital media design.
(iv) To foster the expertise needed for you to take an
active role in the diverse field of digital media.
(v) To support you in developing your knowledge and
skills to allow for a critical and independent approach
to problem solving.
The course is related to the BSc in Music,Media &
PerformanceTechnology. Both courses offer somewhat
different perspectives on digital media,while sharing a
number of modules.The BSc in Digital Media Design is
focussed on the technical principles and theory of digital
media as well as their social and design aspects.
Course Structure
The degree comprises complementary threads of study and
learning.Topics include:
- The technical and mathematical basis of electronic media.
- The principles and practice of digital media including audio
and video.
- The psychological and sociological context and
understanding of media
- Research methods and analysis
- Creative DesignTechniques
There will also be the opportunity for student led
development of projects in directed study.

Entry Requirements
Applicants are required to hold at the time of enrolment the established Leaving Certificate (or an approved
equivalent) with at least Grade C3 in two Higher Level subjects and Grade D3 in four Ordinary or Higher Level
subjects (including Mathematics; Irish or another language; and English).
In addition:
Applicants will be required to hold at least the following in the Leaving Certificate or an approved equivalent: Grade B3
in Ordinary Level or D3 in Higher Level Mathematics.
A Special Mathematics Examination will be offered at UL following the Leaving Certificate results for those students
who did not achieve the Mathematics requirement.

Graduates from this course will be equipped to create and develop interactive multimedia projects.They will have acquired a sophisticated understanding of
the aesthetic and technical issues involved.The unique feature of this course is that it focuses on training a new type of interdisciplinary graduate who
combines technological competence with design expertise and an understanding of human and social activity.There is an increasing need for graduates with
the ability to cross social and technical boundaries, in order to exploit the opportunities offered by computer technology in a range of industries and
services such as recording, general media, broadcasting and education.
