General Information
Introduction
The Bachelor of Technology degree, with specialism in
the teaching of Metalwork and Technology, is designed
to produce graduates with technological and
engineering skills to satisfy the needs of the Irish
second level school system in relation to teaching
Metalwork,Technical Graphics and Technology to Junior
Certificate (and proposed Senior Certificate) level;
Technical Drawing,Technology and Engineering to
Leaving Certificate Higher Level.
Programme of Study
The programme is four years in duration, and is
organised into well defined streams in the following
subject areas:
- Education
- Manufacturing Technology
- Technical Graphics
- Design
- Electronics and Information Technologies
- Materials and Engineering Sciences
The subject matter has been carefully selected to be
relevant to the requirements of the emerging Leaving
Certificate and Junior Certificate syllabi in the
Technology subjects. Learning outcomes have been
defined for all new modules in the programme. An
element of design is incorporated throughout with
increasing emphasis on design based activities and
independent learning as the course progresses.
Pedagogy is incorporated into all of the relevant (PN
and EY/EN coded) modules as appropriate.
Year 1
The first year concentrates on developing essential
knowledge and skills in the key areas of Education,
Manufacturing Technology,Technical Graphics and
InformationTechnology in addition to the related areas of
Mathematics,Materials Science,Mathematics and Physics.
Year 2
Semester three at the start of year 2 further develops
and consolidates the material learned in year 1 in
preparation for Teaching Practice and introduces the
concepts of Design and Electro technology. Semester
four incorporates six weeks of Teaching Practice
preceded by four weeks preparation.
Year 3
The areas of Materials Technology, Electronics,
Automation as well as advanced topics in
Manufacturing Technology and Technical Graphics are
the focus of Year 3.There is a particular emphasis on
design based learning and problem solving as well as
the management of these activities in schools.
Education & Society and Curriculum studies are dealt
with in Education.
Year 4
In semester seven, the students take ten weeks of
Teaching Practice. In addition work on the final year
project commences. In semester eight the students
complete the final year project and cover advanced
topics in the areas of Education,Technical Graphics,
Manufacturing Systems Design, Machine Control and
Engineering Science.

Postgraduate Opportunities
Graduates from the programme have the opportunity
to pursue further study in the disciplines of Engineering
or Education. There are a number of taught masters
degree programmes in UL that can be taken up by
graduates of the programme. In addition, graduates can
register for higher degrees by research in either
engineering or education that lead to masters or PhD
qualifications.
Entry Requirements
Applicants are required to hold at the time of enrolment the established Leaving Certificate (or an approved
equivalent) with at least Grade C3 in two Higher Level subjects and Grade D3 in four Ordinary or Higher Level
subjects (including Mathematics, Irish or another language and English). In addition, applicants are required to hold
at least the following in the Leaving Certificate or an approved equivalent: Grade B3 in Ordinary Level
Mathematics (Grade D3 in Higher Level Mathematics also suffices) and Grade D3 at Higher Level (or Grade C3
or above at Ordinary Level) in one of the following:Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Physics with
Chemistry, Engineering,Technical Drawing/Design & Communication Graphics,Technology, Construction Studies,
Agricultural Science, Biology.
Career Prospects
Graduates of this degree programme are eligible for appointments to all second level schools (vocational,
secondary, community and comprehensive schools) and for admission to the open register for Secondary
Teachers. The graduates of the programme will be able to teach Engineering Technology,Technology and Technical
Graphics at Junior and Leaving Certificate level in Irish schools.
