General Information

The Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) programme(s) including BBS (LM050), BBS with French (LM052), BBS with German (LM053) and BBS with Japanese (LM055) incorporates an innovative curriculum and the very latest thinking and practice in a modern internationally focussed undergraduate degree in business management. The BBS suite of programmes equips students with the necessary competence in key business functions and a range of core skills so as to enable them on graduation to embark on challenging and rewarding careers. Students graduating with a BBS are also fully prepared to pursue a wide range of taught and research postgraduate programmes.

EPAS Accredited

EPAS is an international programme accreditation system operated by EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development). It aims to evaluate the quality of any business and /or management degree programme that has an international perspective and, where of an appropriately high quality, to accredit it.The BBS programme (and the BBS with French/German/ Japanese) is the first undergraduate programme to achieve EPAS accreditation in Ireland.

Course Structure

A blend of core business disciplines and management functions is integrated into the innovative design of the BBS, allowing insights to be reached early in the programme. The programme provides a strong foundation in a range of core business courses including Accounting, Economics, Finance, Human Resource Management, Management, Marketing, Risk Management and Business Mathematics, which run throughout the first three semesters. Students choose their major option in the second semester of year 2 which consists of 2 modules per semester from second through to fourth year, with an intervening cooperative education placement. A choice of five major options are available (1) Accounting and Finance; (2) Economics and Finance; (3) Marketing; (4) Human Resource Management and (5) Risk Management and Insurance.

In year 3, LM050 BBS students also take a minor option which consists of one module per semester over the final two years. The following Minor Options are currently offered: Business Research Methods and Final Year Project; Globalisation – An Economic Perspective; Entrepreneurship; Environmental Management; Financial Services; Human Geography; Information Management; Law; Management;Organisational Psychology; Quantitative Analysis for Business; Sociology; Technology Awareness and Tourism.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to hold at the time of enrolment the established Leaving Certificate (or an approved equivalent) with at least Grade C3 in two Higher Level subjects and Grade D3 in four Ordinary or Higher Level subjects (including Mathematics; Irish or another language; and English). In addition, applicants are required to hold at least the following in the Leaving Certificate or an approved equivalent: Grade C3 in Ordinary Level Mathematics.

Additionally,Modern Language students are required to hold at least Grade C3 in a Higher Level paper in the relevant language in the Leaving Certificate or an approved equivalent. For students wishing to study Japanese, a Grade C3 in a language other than English in a Higher Level paper in the Leaving Certificate or an approved equivalent,will suffice.

Career Prospects

Employment opportunities for BBS graduates have been excellent, as the degree provides a general business education as well as an opportunity to combine specialist options.The latest survey of BBS graduates revealed that only two per cent of BBS graduates were seeking employment. Students who complete the BBS may choose from a wide range of careers in the public and private sectors.The precise job titles will depend upon the student's special interests and abilities together with the nature of their employer's business (www.ul.ie/careers)
