General Information

Our present-day assumptions and attitudes have been subject to continuous development over hundreds of years. So, if your horizons stretch beyond the immediate here and now, you will be interested in studying English and History at degree level. These are literary subjects, which require an interest in reading and in how language works. They are also rewarding subjects that are taken seriously by employers. You will study poems, plays and novels, and will be given an understanding of the theory of literature. You will also be introduced to the people, themes and developments that have made Ireland, Europe and theWorld what they are today. When you have graduated, your skills in the job market will be the valued ones of professional writers who know how to sift and prioritise information, as well as write discursively in clear and elegant prose.

Introduction

The BA in English and History is one of a number of two-subject degrees designed for students who wish to undertake specialised study to degree level in two subjects in the arts, humanities or social sciences. This programme will enable the student to develop critical and analytical skills especially as they are developed through the study of English language and literature and social, cultural and political history. In the final year the student will have the opportunity to undertake a substantial research project on a chosen subject.

Off campus programme

In semester 4 and 5 each student participates in an offcampus programme. This usually consists of a period of paid employment in a sector related to the field of study such as archival, museum or library work, journalism or communications, or a period of university study in either Europe or North America as part of a Socrates or other exchange programme.

Postgraduate Opportunities

Students who have graduated in the BA in English & History often continue at university for further study.
