Betty graduated with an honours degree in Civil Engineering from University College Cork in 1983. On graduating she took up a position with Michael Punch and Partners (MPP) in Limerick. Betty has over 25 years of experience as a civil and structural engineer responsible for the technical and managerial aspects of civil and structural engineering projects of various sizes and complexities including public and private works. Betty currently runs her own company Betty Carmody Consulting Engineer while continuing to work on a part-time with Punch Consulting Engineers (fomerly MPP)
Since joining the CIVIL @ UL team in January 2010 Betty has been a tutor in the Problem Based Learning (PBL) process in a number of Modules with second and third years including Design Studio, Steel and Timber Design, Integrated Design, Water and Hydrology, Water Management Systems and Introduction to Geology and Soils.
Betty’s teaching experience started in 1995 when she tutored in the Department of the Built Environment at Limerick Institute of Technology on the Public Health module which also adopted a problem based learning approach for the students.
Betty brings her considerable experience in industry to the PBL process by encouraging a common sense and practical approach to the learning experience of the students.
Having formerly played badminton, soccer and dingy sailing Betty values the benefits of sport in a person’s life. With four sons who are heavily involved in sporting activities she is now taking a more supportive role from the sideline and a managerial and coaching role including training the local under ten soccer team.
