MSc Module Purpose and Rationale

  • Project and Programme Management Science and Principles

This module explores the core concepts and theories of project management science and relates them to the emerging phenomenon of programme management. It provides learners with a deepened understanding of project and programme related principles and associated strategic and operational frameworks, and how they might be integrated within a variety of organisational settings. This module provides the opportunity to explore new and developing theories that are useful in explaining project related phenomena within a variety of empirical settings.

  • Project and Programme Planning and Control

This module provides a high level perspective in developing organisation goals and objectives and translating these into portfolio and programmes aims and objectives. It shows how project and programme baseline models are developed and demonstrates the adaptation and integration of tracking and control systems used to monitor and control progress throughout project and programme lifecycles. It introduces enterprise level project and programme governance structures and procedures that provide an overall framework for project and programme delivery mechanisms aimed at delivering sustainable business benefits.

  • People and Behaviour in Projects

The module focuses on developing understanding of behaviour and people issues in projects. Research in the social and behavioural sciences supports the view that the effective management of people is vital to project success. People represent a critical resource however their behaviour needs to be aligned with the goal of the project. Behaviour can be understood at individual, team and organisation levels of analysis.

  • Project Leadership, Sustainability and Governance

Research in the social sciences supports the view that leadership has an impact on overall organisational performance. Given the temporal aspects associated with projects, there are particular challenges facing the project manager when leading and directing a team through the project. Related is the sustainability and corporate and social responsibility themes emerging from social sciences which provide a guiding framework for the project manager when determining appropriate course of actions in dealing with day to day decision making on projects. The project manager must be supported by an appropriate governance framework structured around projects and programmes, providing a clear set of guidelines on roles and responsibilities at all levels within the project organisation. This module integrates these themes and aims to raise the awareness of the importance of effective leadership to provide direction to the project team, guided by professional ethical standards and appropriate organisational support structures and processes, demonstrated through empirical application.

  • Programme Value , Risk and Decision Making

The overall aim of this module is to introduce the foundation concepts , and process framework use to develop business models and value solutions through projects and programmes. It will include models of benefits management and benefits realisation tracking throughout programme lifecycles, and incorporate risk management, probability assessments and decision analysis theories and their empirical applications in critically evaluating programme options. The module integrates these elements in an overall framework for the management and execution of projects and programmes.

  • In Company Project

This In Company Project provides learners with the opportunity to conduct empirical investigations, using value management as a modelling and decision making framework, through the medium of projects and programmes in a live organisational setting. Under faculty supervision, each team of learners investigate a problem of strategic importance to the organisation and reports its recommendations at the end of the exercise to supervising faculty and to the sponsoring organisation.

  • Strategic Management and Programmes

Appreciating the scope and direction of the organisation is paramount in planning and managing complex programmes. This module provides a critical overview of the dimensions of corporate strategy and strategy implementation, with a specific focus on programme management and programme management competence as levers of strategic renewal, building on some core concepts introduced in previous modules, e.g. Programme Value Risk and Decision Making, Foundations of Project and Programme Management and People and Behaviour in Projects.

  • Commercial Management of Projects

This module draws on elements of economics and finance, with foundations in the decision sciences, including mathematical techniques that provide grounding in all financial, budgeting and tracking issues relating to project finance and cost management. It introduces capital budgeting and project appraisal and links this to project budgeting, and tracking of future benefits using value management and risk management as core. It provides a perspective on procurement and contracting to equip the student with basic economic concepts associated with outsourcing, which is essential in any project context. The module consolidates important elements from finance and economics which are relevant to project management.

  • Research in Projects and Organisations

This module provides the learner with the latest research approaches knowledge and skills set necessary to conduct conceptual and empirical research within the Project Management environment. On completing the module learners’ will have the ability to undertake desktop research to critically analyse projects through literature review and undertake action based research on live projects within business and industry.  As well as developing the learners research skills they will be in a position to deliver benefits to the business or industry concerned by conducting research into important issues and phenomena that arise on projects.

  • International Project Management

This module combines the essentials of project management with social science disciplines associated with managing cultural diversity, heterogeneous stakeholders, intercultural communication, international cooperation and collaboration. It provides international reach for the student irrespective of whether they choose a career at home or abroad. This module addresses various success factors that any project manager must be familiar with when managing international projects and diverse teams globally.

  • Knowledge and Information Management in Project Environments

To provide the project manager with a deepened understanding of the role of knowledge, information and technology in organisations with specific focus on projects. Explore the changing nature of work in the context of new technology and particularly the network economy. Provide an understanding of the nature of data, information and knowledge as organisational resources. The module addresses the opportunities and challenges in relation to providing leadership and managerial skills for the implementation and managing of these resources in an economic and social framework.

  • Research Paper

Carrying out applied research in project management is beneficial as it provides the learner the opportunity to explore project management as a discipline and use the latest research in a specific area to address real situations that arise on projects. The research component of the MSc is designed to develop conceptual, methodological and analytical skills among candidates. Building on their research proposal, originally developed in the Research Methods Module, candidates are assigned to a research supervisor who will mentor them in the development, execution and completion of their research paper.
