John's background is Civil Engineering and Project Management. Graduated from UCC in 1987,  he gained over 15 years industry experience before joining the University of Limerick in 2002.  He has worked as  a design engineer and project manager for construction firms (Rush & Tompkins UK), design consultants (BSD Consultants, Perth, Atkins McCarthy and KML CarlBro, Dublin) and local authorities (Limerick City Council). This international  construction industry experience in Ireland, the UK and Australia gave him insight to the design and construction management of major retail and commercial developments, large scale infrastructure projects in highways, water and wastewater. He is a chartered engineer with Engineers Ireland and completed a Masters in Project Mangement (M.PM) in UL in 2000.  Since joining the Centre for Project Management , he has been involved in project management education, training and research across industry sectors and was appointed Director to the Centre for Project Management in 2005.
