Personnel and Employment Relations :: Programmes

The Department of Personnel and Employment Relations (P&ER) delivers a range of programmes and modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the KBS and to other faculties within UL. We have been a leading innovator in terms of our approach to HRM education in Ireland. We were the first department to offer a Certificate and Diploma in Personnel Management in 1981 (redesigned as a degree in Human Resource Management some years later) and were the first to the marketplace to include a HRM specialism in a BBS degree.

This innovative approach continued with the development of taught postgraduate programmes: in 1999, P&ER was the first department in Ireland to introduce a taught master’s in HRM, and in 2007, it developed a master’s in Work Psychology, which, to date, is the only such programme in Ireland to have been accredited by both the PSI and the CIPD.

Derived from academically rigorous and intellectually stimulating fields, these undergraduate and graduate programmes prepare graduates for a range of careers in Private, Public and Not-For-Profit Organisations. Typical graduate employment encompasses areas such as Human Resources, Management Development, Employee Relations, Training and Development, Management Consulting, Organizational and Leadership Development, in addition to employment in academia and research.

Ensuring the academic and professional standing of our suite of programmes has always been a critical objective for the department and the achievement of accreditation status is seen as a quality benchmark in the realisation of this objective. The following programmes have recently received national and international accreditation:

  • MSc in HRM and BBS: EPAS re-accreditation in 2015
  • MSc in WOP: PSI re-accreditation in 2013
  • MSc in HRM, MSc in WOP and MSc in WOB: CIPD re-accreditation in 2015
  • BBS HRM Specialism, BA in HRM and Certificate in HR and Supervisory Practice: CIPD re-accreditation in 2015

Teaching quality is consistently high on P&ER programmes, which is evidenced by two UL Excellence in Teaching awards and a number of UL Excellence in Teaching nominations. In addition, a number of staff members have attended the International Teachers Programme, participated in international teaching exchanges through the Erasmus Mundus programme or spent sabbatical periods abroad, all of which have exposed them to international best practice in third-level teaching.
