LM050 BBS Major Option: Economics & Finance
I graduated from UL in 2002. After completing my four year degree I decided to join KPMG, an accountancy firm in Dublin.
I was always interested in Business and Economics in school and I was keen to pursue a degree that would fill my interests. In school I was never sure where I wanted to go to college, I believe UL found me and not the other way around. Once I was accepted into UL, I started to research the college further I was amazed at the campus and facilities - the sports facilities in particular!
I found UL to be an excellent college to both study and live. The degree programme was so diverse it provided a flavour for a whole breath of subjects, I found this to be very beneficial as every student can spend two years deciding which subjects they like, before they must decide what area they would like to specialise in. The subjects are varied, interesting and are taught by lectures with a genuine interested in the field in which they teach. This enthusiasm is great and makes the lectures very approachable.
Its hard to mention UL without mentioning the fantastic facilities offered by the college. There is something for everyone: from soccer to kayaking. One thing I would recommend is to go to UL with an open mind, try something different - there is no need to stick to the traditional sport - there are so many opportunities - just take a chance! For all those who like the night life - there is plenty of that available too!
Probably the most underestimated qualities UL has is its reputation in the Business world. I was not aware of UL reputation, but it became apparent to me while undertaking co-operative work experience. UL has excellent business contact, all of which are eager to take on UL graduates both for work experience but also as full time employees. UL graduates are recognised as intelligent and hard working. Having this platform to work off, makes seeking employment a lot easier.
Overall my experiences in UL were excellent. Its four years I would never trade. You get out of college what you put into it. UL offers some much in return for a little hard work. It provides you with so many skills both academically and socially that you will be able to apply in any environment in any part of the world. Finally remember 'success is not a destination it's a journey'.
LM050 BBS Major Option: Marketing
Hi there!! My Name is Aoife Keating, and I am a former student of the Kemmy Business School in the University of Limerick. Following on from my graduation in 2006, I have joined Accenture, a Multinational Consultancy Firm specialising in providing IT solutions to Businesses.
My 4 years in UL very much provided a solid grounding for my career. It had always been my intention to apply for Business Studies in UL, and this was very much evident in the courses I took for my Leaving Certificate. The reason UL stood out to me was the diversity which it offered. To a young person, it is absolutely essential to know that at a young age, you are not going to be "pigeon holed" into one area. The course that the Kemmy School of Business offers is wide and varied, touching on all areas of business, right from the all important bottom line of profit and loss to the laws governing the contracts that exist between a business and its stakeholders. In addition to this, in third year, I chose to specialise in the area of marketing in order to put some focus to the 2 years before hand that had provided broad and comprehensive business knowledge.
What struck me when leaving college and applying for jobs was how lucky I was that I had chosen UL. When leaving college, the ideal candidate will have not only strong grades, but experience. The UL co-operative education programme offered by UL is second to none, with well known multi-national companies knocking on UL's door to line up Business Students to work with them for a period of seven months. I was placed with Intel Corporation as a Materials Buyer. This placement was hugely valuable, both in terms of adding the Intel name to my CV (which up to then had consisted of Spar!), and letting me put what I had learned into practise...and learn even more. I went on to base my Final Year project on my work in Intel, and as I graduated, was awarded the Co-op Student of the year award.
Looking back on my time, it is not hard to remember the late night before a project was due, or the cramming in the library that hour before your exam. But it paid off. During my time, I was awarded the Outstanding Student of the Year award in my 3rd year and 4th year of college. This is a yearly award ceremony given by the Kenny Business School for the top students within each Business stream. I also had my choice of employers upon graduation. However, most importantly of all, I had the best 4 years of my life.
LM050 BBS (Human Resource Management Major Option)
I decided on this course and UL for a number of reasons. Business Studies was one of my favourite subjects when I was studying for my Leaving Certificate and I knew I wanted to pursue a career that involved working with people. I felt that this course gave me options and I had time to sample the different aspects of Business such as Accounting; Economics; Maths; Marketing; Organisation Studies, Industrial Relations and even Law. Hence I didn't have to make a defined career choice when I was doing my Leaving Certificate and I felt that a Business degree would be a good grounding that could keep the door open for other options afterwards.
I decided to study in UL because the Business Degree here was recognised as the best in the country and the course incorporates an 8 month co-operative education placement; whereby you are placed in a company working in a department or field related to your major option choice. This placement is a key factor to your development within your time at UL and is very beneficial afterwards. Employers may look more favourably on you when you have completed your degree as you already have work experience and it can also facilitate your career direction and choices when you finish your degree. Another benefit of the co-op placement is that it may be useful when you are doing your final year projects. I was placed in Intel in Leixlip - as I was a HR Major I worked in the HR Staffing department. I really enjoyed the placement and it in fact it helped me to decide that HR was the career for me. I also travelled back to Intel twice when I was in 4th year to do qualitative research for my Final Year Project.
Another big factor in my decision was also because I have a keen interest in sport and the Sports and Recreational Facilities in UL are fantastic. Once I had settled in to UL I joined the UL Ladies Gaelic Football Club where I made lots of friends and had a great time celebrating victories! I was Club Secretary of the UL Ladies Club 2003-2004. I captained of UL Intermediate team 2003-2004 when we won the Munster league and Munster championship and I played in the intervarsity's 2005. Even if you don't join one of the many sports and social clubs in UL, there is plenty to keep you occupied. The gym and pool facilities are amazing and even if I am a little biased I believe that UL organises the best Rag Week's in the country and they also have great bands and events on all year round.
UL have a great career's office that provides assistance and information about the jobs market when you are in 4th year. I heard about the Dell Graduate Programme through their office and applied for the HR Graduate role. I was successful and was placed on a vigorous 18 month development programme, where I would rotate jobs at least three times. I spent my first 9 months in the Learning & Development dept; the next 9 months in Recruitment and now I am working as a HR Consultant for the business. My UL Degree with its diverse range of subjects; my co-op placement and my Final Year Project all leveraged up my ability as a potential candidate for this job.
As I already mentioned this is a broad encompassing Degree that keeps doors open for you in many other further study or work areas. I maintained links with UL when I left in 2006 and decided to return to do a MSc in Work and Organisational Psychology as my Degree qualified me for entry into this course; which I am now enrolled on part-time whilst pursuing my career in HR at Dell also.
My decision to study Business in UL has been extremely beneficial and fulfilling. The Degree is challenging and as the years go on your workload will increase. My main concern about the course was that it might have been very maths and accounting orientated but the University has support mechanisms in place if you find the going gets tough at any time and I certainly haven't looked back since!
LM052 BBS + French (Risk Management & Insurance Major Option)

I graduated with a first class honours degree in Business Studies (Risk Management & Insurance) and French in 2006. I then began working in New Ireland Assurance in Dublin and I am currently working towards achieving the Qualified Financial Advisor (QFA) qualification and also studying for the Advanced Diploma in Insurance awarded by the CII (Chartered Insurance Institute), which is universally recognized by all the professional insurance bodies. Having an insurance degree from UL is well renowned and it meant that I was exempt from some of the exams. This gave me a great headstart and means I'll be fully qualified a lot sooner!
I'm from Dublin, so moving to Limerick was a big step and I didn't know anyone when I arrived there, however the atmosphere is so friendly around campus I had no problem making lots of friends within the first few days of starting my course.
I thoroughly enjoyed the 4 years I spent in UL. I lived on-campus and the facilities are superb with great sports amenities, restaurants & a fantastic Concert Hall. The first two years of the Business Degree are very broad and cover most business-related areas, so each student can get an idea of the area they are most interested in. Then for the final two years you choose the area you would most like to specialise in. There are many career guidance seminars to also help with this decision.
It was clear to me from the start that the lecturers and staff in the University treated personal development as importantly as academic development. There are many social events held throughout the year and you have the opportunity to join a vast range of different clubs and societies. Rag week is held once a year, with the aim of raising money for charity and this is always a great time for fun, enjoyment and social interaction with other students!
Of course, it wasn't all fun and games; there was a lot of hard work and study needed throughout the course, however the projects were always very interesting and all the work that was expected of us was reasonable, and exams were always fair.
As I also studied French, I got the opportunity to attend college in France for a semester. This is called Erasmus and it is another great educational program that UL offers. I spent 4 months studying in Montpellier, which was great experience, and I learned all about the French culture and way of life there, while also learning all of the business subjects through French, which I admit was tough but also very fulfilling!
I was awarded the 'Outstanding Student Award' for coming first in my class in Risk Management & Insurance in 2006. This is an annual award ceremony presented by the Kemmy Business School and sponsored by the Bank of Scotland. I was delighted as this was a great personal achievement for me.
In 3rd year all BBS students take part in the Co-Operative Education programme, which I must say I thoroughly enjoyed. I worked in Allianz Insurance for 6 months, which really gave me a good insight into the working world and the insurance industry. From this, I knew I liked the area and it was also an advantage to have a good bit of experience when I was offered the job in New Ireland Assurance. I must say that the Co-Op experience definitely helped make it a smoother transition. I won the 'Best Newcomer Award' at the Bank of Ireland Excellence Awards last year and I have really settled into working life.
The time I spent in UL was great fun but equally an exciting and challenging period. It provided me with excellent experience of living away from home, being independent and I am still great friends with many of the people I met there. I would definitely advise anyone who's looking for a highly recognised degree while also enjoying all the extra benefits and fun the campus has to offer, to head to UL!
