LM052 BBS with French ( Accounting & Finance Major Option)
LM052 BBS with French ( Accounting & Finance Major Option)
I graduated from UL in 2006 with a degree in Business Studies with French (Accounting & Finance) and am currently working as a trainee chartered accountant with Deloitte & Touche in Cork. I chose to study at UL mainly due to the fact that it would allow me to both study abroad for a semester and also to complete a Co-Operative Education work placement.
The BBS degree is extremely well structured. For the first two years, I had the opportunity to study a wide variety of subjects including Accounting, Economics, Law, Marketing and IT before choosing to specialise in Accounting & Finance for my final two years. I also studied French each semester. The French course was extremely practical and focused mainly on improving our oral and written fluency combined with lectures about French culture and society. All of my lecturers and tutors over the course of the four years were extremely helpful and approachable.
One of the highlights of my four years had to be my experience of the Erasmus programme. I was lucky enough to spend a semester studying at a university in Montpellier, a beautiful city situated in the south of France. This gave me the opportunity to experience French culture first hand and to become fluent in the language. I also met people from all over the world including Finland, Italy, Colombia and Brazil. It's an experience which I would thoroughly recommend. Students who are not studying a language can also avail of the Erasmus programme by studying in a college in Prague or Athens which offers courses through English.
Another highlight was the Co-Operative Education placement which I completed in the Audit Department in KPMG, Dublin. I had always been interested in the accountancy area and the eight months which I spent in KPMG allowed me to experience the day to day work of a trainee accountant. This was of great benefit to me during final year when deciding what career path to follow. The placement was a great learning experience for me and all students who worked with KPMG received excellent training in the areas of presentation skills, time management and teamwork. I think that the Co-Operative Education placement is one of the main things that sets UL graduates apart from other graduates on the jobs market.

LM050 BBS
Major Option: Economics & Finance
I graduated from UL in 2002. After completing my four year degree I decided to join KPMG, an accountancy firm in Dublin.
I was always interested in Business and Economics in school and I was keen to pursue a degree that would fill my interests. In school I was never sure where I wanted to go to college, I believe UL found me and not the other way around. Once I was accepted into UL, I started to research the college further I was amazed at the campus and facilities - the sports facilities in particular!
I found UL to be an excellent college to both study and live. The degree programme was so diverse it provided a flavour for a whole breath of subjects, I found this to be very beneficial as every student can spend two years deciding which subjects they like, before they must decide what area they would like to specialise in. The subjects are varied, interesting and are taught by lectures with a genuine interested in the field in which they teach. This enthusiasm is great and makes the lectures very approachable.
Its hard to mention UL without mentioning the fantastic facilities offered by the college. There is something for everyone: from soccer to kayaking. One thing I would recommend is to go to UL with an open mind, try something different - there is no need to stick to the traditional sport - there are so many opportunities - just take a chance! For all those who like the night life - there is plenty of that available too!
Probably the most underestimated qualities UL has is its reputation in the Business world. I was not aware of UL reputation, but it became apparent to me while undertaking co-operative work experience. UL has excellent business contact, all of which are eager to take on UL graduates both for work experience but also as full time employees. UL graduates are recognised as intelligent and hard working. Having this platform to work off, makes seeking employment a lot easier.
Overall my experiences in UL were excellent. Its four years I would never trade. You get out of college what you put into it. UL offers some much in return for a little hard work. It provides you with so many skills both academically and socially that you will be able to apply in any environment in any part of the world. Finally remember 'success is not a destination it's a journey'.
