The Artist and Academia, edited by Helen Phelan and Graham F. Welch, was recently launched by scholar and singer Professor Tríona Ní Shíocháin and poet Fióna Bolger as part of a day long webinar co-hosted by Solstice Arts Centre and IMBAS, the Irish forum for arts practice research, supported through an Irish Research Council New Foundations project coordinated by Professor Mel Mercier. The book explores the changing relationship between artistic and academic ways of knowing and includes essays and reflections from musicians, dancers, actors, visual artists, and creative writers. The collection was inspired by a convocation of artists and scholars who gathered at the University of Limerick to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, and features several contributions from University of Limerick colleagues, past and present, including Amanda Clifford, Aileen Dillane, Jean Downey, Catherine Foley, Óscar Mascareñas, Tríona McCaffrey, Hilary Moss, Orfhlaith Ní Bhriain, Mary Nunan, Joseph O’Connor, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin and Kathleen Turner. It was published by Routledge (2021) as part of the SEMPRE series of studies in the psychology of music.
