Nursing badge from World War 1

Lizzie McGlynn, from Pound Street in Sligo, joined up as a nurse during world war one but was killed. She was one of over 500 Sligo people who died in world war one. There were over 2,5000 Voluntary Aid Detachments in Britain and worked as nurses, assistant nurses, ambulance drivers and cooks.  From 1915, VAD nurses aged over twenty-three were permitted to serve at the front line along with working in VAD hospitals in Britain.
